Are you an experienced Deputy Head looking for a bigger role or an outstanding Assistant Head looking for the next step up?

St Matthew’s C of E School is a large 2 form-entry primary school (NOR: 480) including Nursery and Special Need Support Centre based in the heart of Redhill, Surrey, with excellent road and rail links that allows easy travel from further afield.

We are embarking on a new chapter in the life of St Matthew’s. From September, we will be one of the first cohort of schools to join the newly formed Southwark Diocesan Board of Education Multi-Academy Trust. The school has so much to celebrate, though still more has to be done to implement and embed improvements to teaching and learning and secure better outcomes for our children.

We are looking for an outstanding School Leader with high expectations of children’s learning and behaviour to play a significant part in our school improvement programme.

The role is non-class-based although it will include some teaching. The post holder will work as part of the Senior Leadership Team in monitoring, coaching and having a whole-school overview in order to continue to accelerate pupils’ progress and raise standards. Effective analysis and use of performance data to impact on pupil progress and attainment will be a key aspect of the role.

We can offer you:

  • The exciting challenge of taking our school to “good” and onto “outstanding”
  • Opportunities to teach and lead curriculum areas and extra-curriculum activities across the whole primary age range
  • A committed team of colleagues and governors
  • A happy and harmonious community built on strong Christian foundations
  • A school with excellent facilities and extensive grounds

Applicants are expected to be sympathetic to the Christian ethos of the school.

If you believe you can provide outstanding leadership, which inspires and motivates others towards excellence and ensures the very best education for all our learners, then we would love to hear from you.

You are warmly encouraged to come and visit St Matthew’s where you can see for yourself our unique and inclusive character.

For further details and to arrange a visit or have an informal discussion about the role please contact Liam Dowds, in complete confidence, on 01737 652 043 or ldowds@emmausleadership.me.

St Matthew’s School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.  All appointments are subject to an enhanced DBS check.

"Emmaus were instrumental in persuading me to apply for the post of Headteacher. I had seen the school advertising in the past but nothing inspired me to get in touch. Once Emmaus advertised I felt intrigued and keen to learn more about the school. I was supported throughout the whole process, which was a very personal and positive experience. I would highly recommend Emmaus to any school thinking of recruiting, and candidates considering registering. If my new school had not used Emmaus I probably wouldn’t have applied."

Hannah Walters, Headteacher, Platt CE Primary School - Kent

"Emmaus brings a level of professionalism, seen in other industry sectors, to church schools’ recruitment."

The Rt Rev Nick Baines - Anglican Bishop of Leeds

"I cannot imagine a better service to fulfil the requirement of helping a Catholic school find a Head. I was impressed with the number and high quality of candidates sourced by Emmaus Leadership."

Marjorie Bannister, Chair - St Michael's Catholic College, London

"We came across Emmaus by accident after our own attempts to recruit a Headteacher failed. We would not hesitate to engage them again to find a suitable candidate for a leadership position."

Michael Tennant - Chairman of the Board, St Edward's School

"I have no hesitation in commending Emmaus to any school that is seeking to appoint a Christian Headteacher. In particular, Emmaus’ ability to promote the school, assess the ethos of the school and communicate this within the networks of those who might be considered as possible candidates was invaluable."

Clive Purser, Chair of Governors, St Andrew's CE High School for Boys, Worthing

"…we also considered other external recruiters, but Emmaus were clear favourites in terms of their recruitment expertise and in-depth knowledge and appreciation of the catholic school’s sector."

Peter Giorgio, Director of Education, Nottingham Diocese

"I have personal experience of the quality of service Emmaus provides, when I successfully applied for a Headship position through them. I always felt I could call up, get the ‘inside take’ on the school and ask any questions in complete confidence. The support and expert advice I received made the application process far less daunting and I would thoroughly recommend Emmaus to any Church School looking to appoint a key Leadership position."

Dan Pickard, Headteacher, The Bishop’s CE Primary School - Thetford

"We tried going it alone to find a CEO for our MAT but had only 2 applicants who didn't meet our requirements. We approached Emmaus and from the start their professionalism was reassuring."

Barry Leyland, Chair - Blessed Edward Bamber Catholic Multi Academy Trust

"I approached Emmaus following our unsuccessful attempts to recruit Deputy DDEs for both Dioceses. They went on to source a far greater number of candidates of high calibre. I highly recommend Emmaus!"

Canon Carolyn Lewis, Director of Education - Diocese of Leicester and Diocese of Derby

"I’m delighted with the way it went and the successful outcome (third SLT placement now!) helps confirm to Governors that your approach is right for these levels of appointment. It’s difficult to quantify the costs of recruiting and failing to get the right candidate ourselves - we’d only find out the true cost and also lost opportunities if we tried and failed. Altogether better to invest in getting it right first time, so thank you for all your hard work on this. The other side is the perception we leave with all candidates and I think we’ve worked together to do an excellent job (using your Assessment support). The communication, logistics and the care given I think is really important and Emmaus are a big part of that - you work as an extension of the school. I am fairly sure that all of the candidates will go away having had a great experience and that will help our reputation spread in a positive way."

Dave Cobb - School Business & Development Manager, Saint Cecilia's CE School, London
